World’s Best Analytics Teams Compete to Win 2010 Edelman Prize for Achievement in Operations Research

ORLANDO, FL, March 26, 2010 – The Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences (INFORMS^®) today announced six finalists that will compete for the 2010 Franz Edelman Award for Achievement in Operations Research and the Management Sciences in Orlando this year.

The 2010 Franz Edelman Award finalists are:

1. Delaware River Basin Commission for “Improving Water Release Policies on the Delaware River through Operations Research”
2. Deutsche Post DHL for “Global Brand Assessment”
3. Indeval for “Indeval Develops a New Operating and Settlement System Using Operations Research”
4. New Brunswick Canada Dept. of Transportation for “Achieving Transportation Asset Management via Operations Research”
5. Procter & Gamble for “Inventory Optimization at Procter & Gamble: Achieving Real Benefits Through User Adoption of Inventory Tools”
6. Sasol for “Innovative Decision Support in a Petrochemical Production Environment”

This is the 39^th year of the prestigious Franz Edelman competition. The winner will be announced at a special awards banquet at 7:30 PM on April 19 during Applying Science to the Art of Business: the 2010 INFORMS Conference on OR/MS Practice. The conference takes place at the Hilton Orlando Bonnet Creek in Orlando from April 18-20.

Every year, the Franz Edelman competition recognizes outstanding examples of operations research-based projects that transform companies, entire industries, and people’s lives. Operations research uses advanced analytical methods to help make better decisions and is a disciplined way by which management can improve organizational performance in a wide variety of situations and in nearly every type of public and private organization.

The top finalist receives a $10,000 honorarium. Past Franz Edelman winners include HP, whose 2009 team balanced the need for product variety with efficiency; Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center; Motorola; and Netherlands Railways.
