Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy’s (ARPA-E) Richard O’Neill, Columbia University’s Martin Reiman and Georgia Tech’s Nikolaos Sahinidis are Among More than 100 Newly Elected 2022 National Academy of Engineering Members
BALTIMORE, MD, February 16, 2022 – Three INFORMS members have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering. Richard O'Neill is a distinguished senior fellow at the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy, Martin Reiman is a professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research at Columbia University and Nikolaos Sahinidis is the Gary C. Butler Family Chair and professor in the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. They join more than 100 new members recently elected.
Election to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) is among the highest professional distinctions accorded to an engineer. Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice, or education, including, where appropriate, significant contributions to the engineering literature” and “the pioneering of new and developing fields of technology, making major advancements in traditional fields of engineering, or developing/implementing innovative approaches to engineering education.”
O’Neill is recognized for leadership and contributions to the liberalization and design of efficient natural gas and electric power markets. Reiman is recognized for his contributions to network theory and applications in large-scale stochastic systems, and Sahinidis for his contributions to global optimization and the development of widely used software for optimization and machine learning.
Election of new NAE members is the culmination of a yearlong process. The newly-elected class will be formally inducted at the NAE’s Annual Meeting on Oct. 2, 2022, in Washington, D.C.
