TIMS President, 1970-71
Peter Norden was the 17th President of TIMS. He is a retired consultant of IBM's Management Technologies practice, specializing in the application of quantitative techniques to management problems and project management systems. For more than 40 years he was involved in research and development management, and design and development in manufacturing and related industries. He continues to work as Adjunct Professor of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research in Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. He also taught at Columbia's Graduate School of Business and in the Executive MBA program of Pace University's Lubin School of Business.
His IBM assignments included direction of Scientific Software Development; and market support for Knowledge-Based and Expert Systems applications for Manufacturing, Process, and Utilities Industries. He has also served as Program Manager of Technology Transfer, Consultant in Manufacturing Research and was Manager of an Engineering and Scientific Support Center in White Plains, NY. At the Center he was responsible for all of IBM's Scientific Software (Optimization, Simulation, Project Management, Mathematics and Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, and Decision Support Systems).
He served as President of TIMS in 1970-71. He was General Chairman of the 1975 TIMS/ORSA International Meeting in Japan. and as VP of Publications for TIMS, helped found Interfaces.He was President and a founder of CPMS (The Practice Section of INFORMS). In 1996, he was awarded the George E. Kimball medal for service to INFORMS and TIMS. For many years he also served as Judge and Coach for the Franz Edelman Prize Competition, and screener for the Daniel H. Wagner Prize Competition. Peter is still active in INFORMS activities including being a member of the board of CPMS in 2010.
Peter published a number of papers and handbook chapters dealing with project management systems, scheduling, research and development, mathematical programming, computing and information systems, and artificial intelligence/expert systems. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, a Fellow of INFORMS and of the International Academy of Management, a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, and Life Member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers.
